Quick answer

On the standard 4.0 scale, an A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0 and D = 1.0, with plus and minus grades in between (A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3). In percentages, A is 93–100%, B is 83–86% and C is 73–76%. A 3.0 GPA (B average) is the usual benchmark for “good”, and the average US high school graduate had a 3.11 in 2019.

How to read your GPA

  • Unweighted vs weighted: the chart is for unweighted GPAs on a 4.0 scale. A weighted GPA (honors/AP bonus) can be higher — see weighted vs unweighted GPA.
  • Average: the average US high school graduate had a 3.11 GPA in 2019.
  • Key thresholds: 2.0 for good academic standing, 3.0 for many graduate programmes and scholarships, 3.5 for cum laude at many colleges, 3.7 for magna cum laude and 3.9 for summa cum laude.
