Final Grade Calculator: What Do I Need on My Final?

Updated By the ProAcademy Tools editorial team3 min read

Find the exact score you need on your final exam to get an A, B or C in the class — or see where your final grade lands after the exam.

Quick answer

To find the score you need on a final, use required = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final’s weight as a decimal. With an 84% grade, a final worth 25% and a 90% target, you need (90 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 108% — out of reach — but an 85% target needs only 88%.

How to use the final grade calculator

  1. Enter your current grade — the percentage shown in your gradebook before the final (Canvas, Blackboard, PowerSchool and similar systems show this).
  2. Enter the final exam weight from your syllabus, for example 20% or 30%.
  3. Enter the grade you want in the class. The result shows the final-exam score you need.
  4. Check the table underneath for the score needed for every letter grade from A+ to D at once.
  5. After the exam, switch to “Final grade from my exam score” to see your course grade.

The final exam formula

Your course grade after the final is a weighted average of two parts: everything before the final, and the final itself.

Final grade = current grade × (1 − w) + final exam score × w Score needed on final = (target grade − current grade × (1 − w)) ÷ w w = final exam weight as a decimal (25% → 0.25)

The formula assumes your “current grade” already reflects all the non-final work in the class. If big assignments are still ungraded, use the weighted grade calculator instead — it handles several remaining categories.

Worked examples

Example 1 — Aiming for a B. Your current grade is 78% and the final is worth 30%. To finish with 80%: (80 − 78 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (80 − 54.6) ÷ 0.30 = 25.4 ÷ 0.30 = 84.7% on the final.

Example 2 — Is an A still possible? Your current grade is 84% and the final is worth 25%. To reach 90%: (90 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (90 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 108%. Unless there is extra credit, an A is no longer reachable — but 85% needs only 88%.

Example 3 — How low can I go? Your current grade is 92% and the final is worth 20%. To keep 90%: (90 − 92 × 0.80) ÷ 0.20 = (90 − 73.6) ÷ 0.20 = 82%.

How much does the final weight change things?

Score needed on the final for a student with an 82% who wants a 90%:

Final exam weight Score needed for 90%
10% 162% (not possible)
20% 122% (not possible)
30% 108.7% (not possible)
40% 102% (not possible)
50% 98%

The heavier the final, the more it can rescue — or sink — your grade. With a light final, your grade is mostly decided by the work you have already done.

What if my gradebook uses points instead of weights?

In a total-points class, the final’s weight is its share of all points. If the final is worth 150 points out of 1,000 in the course, its weight is 15%. Enter your current percentage and 15% as the weight and the calculator works exactly the same.

Strategies when the number looks scary

  • Ask about the grading scale. Some instructors curve, round 89.5% up to an A, or drop the lowest quiz. Your syllabus is the place to check.
  • Look for points before the final. Late assignments, extra credit or a regraded quiz can move your current grade enough to change what you need.
  • Plan study time by stakes. If one course needs 70% and another needs 95%, spend your hours where they change the outcome.
  • Know the floor. If the number you need is very low, you have room to focus on other exams — but do not skip the final; a zero can still drop you a letter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final?

Subtract your current grade times (1 − final weight) from the grade you want, then divide by the final weight. For a 75% current grade, a 20% final and an 80% target: (80 − 75 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 100%.

What if I need more than 100% on my final?

Then the target grade cannot be reached with the final alone. Ask your instructor about extra credit, curves or rounding, and use the table in the calculator to see the best grade still possible.

How much will my final exam affect my grade?

It changes your grade by the final’s weight times the difference between the exam score and your current grade. With a 20% final, scoring 10 points above your current grade raises it by 2 points.

What is my grade if I get a zero on the final?

Multiply your current grade by (1 − final weight). With an 85% and a 25% final, a zero leaves you with 63.75%. Use the “Final grade from my exam score” tab and enter 0 to check.

Does this work for Canvas and Blackboard grades?

Yes. Use the current grade shown in Canvas, Blackboard, Schoology or PowerSchool before the final is entered, and the final exam weight from your syllabus.

Sources and methodology

The calculator applies the standard weighted-average formula used by teachers and learning-management systems. Letter grades in the table use the common US scale (A ≥ 93%, A− ≥ 90%, B+ ≥ 87% …); your instructor’s cut-offs may differ.
