CGPA to Percentage Calculator
Convert your CGPA to a percentage using the formula your board or university actually uses — CBSE, VTU, Mumbai University or your own — and convert percentage back to CGPA.
For CBSE, percentage = CGPA × 9.5, so a CGPA of 8.4 equals 79.8%. Many universities use CGPA × 10 (8.4 → 84%), and some publish their own formula, such as (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 (8.4 → 76.5%). Always use the formula printed on your marksheet or transcript when it gives one.
How to use the CGPA to percentage calculator
- Choose the direction — CGPA to percentage, or percentage to CGPA.
- Select your formula: CBSE, multiply by 10, VTU, Mumbai University, the 4.0 proportional method, or a custom formula.
- Enter your CGPA (or percentage). The result updates instantly.
- Use “Custom formula” if your university’s transcript states a different rule — enter the multiplier and offset (for example 7.25 and 11).
CGPA to percentage formulas
| Board / university | Formula | 8.0 CGPA becomes |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE (Class 10, CCE grading) | CGPA × 9.5 | 76.0% |
| Many universities & autonomous colleges | CGPA × 10 | 80.0% |
| VTU (Karnataka) | (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 | 72.5% |
| Mumbai University (commonly cited) | 7.1 × CGPA + 11 | 67.8% |
| 4.0 scale (proportional estimate) | CGPA ÷ 4 × 100 | — |
The same CGPA can give very different percentages depending on the formula — 8.0 ranges from about 68% to 80% above. That is why companies and universities ask for the formula, or the conversion certificate, issued by your institution.
Why CBSE uses 9.5
When CBSE graded Class 10 by CGPA, it explained that the 9.5 factor was based on the average marks of students who earned the top (A1) grade over several previous years. CBSE described the result as an indicative percentage, not an exact one. Class 10 and 12 results are now issued in marks, so the ×9.5 rule matters mainly for older certificates.

How to convert percentage to CGPA
Reverse the formula your institution uses:
So 76% is 8.0 on the CBSE formula and 7.6 on the ×10 rule. Use the “Percentage → CGPA” tab to do this automatically.
SGPA to percentage
If your university converts each semester’s SGPA rather than the final CGPA, the same formulas usually apply to SGPA. Calculate your SGPA with our CGPA calculator, then convert it here.
CGPA on a 4.0 scale
Universities in Pakistan, the US and elsewhere grade on 4.0. A proportional conversion (CGPA ÷ 4 × 100) is only a rough guide: a 3.0 CGPA becomes 75%, but on the HEC-style scale a B (3.0) corresponds to roughly 71–74% marks. For a fair comparison use the Pakistan GPA calculator or the GPA scale converter, and for official purposes ask your university for an equivalence letter.
Common mistakes when converting CGPA
- Using the CBSE formula for a university degree. The 9.5 factor was defined for CBSE Class 10. Universities set their own rules.
- Converting SGPA when CGPA is required. Applications usually ask for your aggregate — the final CGPA, not one semester.
- Rounding too early. Convert the full CGPA (for example 7.84) and round the final percentage, not the CGPA.
- Mixing scales. A 3.2 on a 4.0 scale and an 8.0 on a 10-point scale are not directly comparable by multiplying by 9.5 or 10.
Where to find your official formula
Look on the back of your final marksheet or consolidated grade card, the examination section of your university’s website, or your university’s academic regulations (ordinances). Many universities also issue a CGPA-to-percentage conversion certificate on request, which employers and foreign universities accept as official.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
Multiply your CGPA by the factor your board or university uses. CBSE uses 9.5, so 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8%. Many universities use 10 (8.4 → 84%). If your transcript states a formula, use that one.
What is 7.5 CGPA in percentage?
Using CBSE’s formula, 7.5 × 9.5 = 71.25%. Using the ×10 rule it is 75%, and using VTU’s (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 it is 67.5%.
Is the CBSE 9.5 formula valid for university CGPA?
Not automatically. The 9.5 factor was defined by CBSE for Class 10 results. Universities set their own conversion rules, which are usually printed on the back of the marksheet or available from the examination section.
How do I convert percentage to CGPA?
Divide by the same factor. On the CBSE formula, 76% ÷ 9.5 = 8.0 CGPA. On the ×10 rule, 76% is 7.6 CGPA.
Which formula do companies accept for placements?
Most companies accept the formula issued by your university. If none exists, they usually accept CGPA × 10 or ask for the CGPA itself. Keep your university’s conversion certificate ready.
