GPA & CGPA Calculator for Pakistani Universities

Updated By the ProAcademy Tools editorial team3 min read

Work out your semester GPA and overall CGPA on the 4.0 scale used by HEC-recognised universities such as COMSATS, NUST, FAST, UET, Punjab University and many more — with a grading table you can edit to match your university.

Quick answer

Pakistani universities calculate GPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours, where quality points = grade points × credit hours. On the commonly used HEC scale, 85%+ is an A (4.00), 80–84% A− (3.67), 75–79% B+ (3.33) and 71–74% B (3.00). Marks of 78 and 88 in two 3-credit courses give (9.99 + 12) ÷ 6 = 3.67.

How to use the GPA calculator

  1. Choose how you enter grades: marks (obtained and total) or grade points straight from your result card.
  2. Add each subject with its credit hours (usually 3, or 1 for labs).
  3. Read your semester GPA and total quality points.
  4. Add your previous CGPA and completed credit hours to see your new CGPA.
  5. Edit the grading scale if your university’s cut-offs differ from the default.

HEC-style grading scale (4.0)

Marks (%) Grade Grade points
85 and above A 4.00
80–84 A− 3.67
75–79 B+ 3.33
71–74 B 3.00
68–70 B− 2.67
64–67 C+ 2.33
61–63 C 2.00
58–60 C− 1.67
54–57 D+ 1.33
50–53 D 1.00
Below 50 F 0.00

This is the scale most commonly associated with HEC’s uniform undergraduate grading policy and used by many public and private universities. Some universities — and some programmes such as MBBS, engineering or agriculture — use different cut-offs or their own quality-point tables, so always compare with your university’s handbook. The calculator lets you edit every cut-off and grade-point value.

GPA and CGPA formulas

Quality points (QP) = grade points × credit hours Semester GPA = total QP this semester ÷ total credit hours this semester CGPA = total QP in all semesters ÷ total credit hours in all semesters

Worked example

Subject Marks Grade Grade points Credit hours Quality points
Calculus 78 B+ 3.33 3 9.99
Programming Fundamentals 88 A 4.00 3 12.00
English Composition 72 B 3.00 3 9.00
Physics Lab 81 A− 3.67 1 3.67
Total 10 34.66

Semester GPA = 34.66 ÷ 10 = 3.47. If your previous CGPA was 3.10 over 54 credit hours, your new CGPA is (167.40 + 34.66) ÷ 64 = 3.16.

Minimum CGPA requirements

  • Most universities require a CGPA of 2.0 or more to graduate from a bachelor’s programme, and place students on probation below that.
  • Many merit scholarships and awards set higher minimums, often around 3.0.
  • MS/MPhil admission criteria are set by HEC’s graduate education policy and by each university; competitive programmes commonly look for 3.0 or more.

Check the current policy on your university’s and HEC’s websites, as requirements are updated.

Converting CGPA to percentage

There is no single national formula. Many universities issue an equivalence certificate; others use a table matching CGPA to percentage bands. A proportional estimate (CGPA ÷ 4 × 100) understates most results — a 3.0 is about 71–74% on the scale above, not 75%. Use our CGPA to percentage calculator with a custom formula once you know your university’s rule.

Repeating a course to improve CGPA

Most universities let you repeat a course with a low grade (often D or F, sometimes C− and below) to improve your CGPA. Usually the better or the latest grade replaces the earlier one, and the course’s credit hours are counted once. Some universities cap how many courses you can repeat or how high the replacement grade can be. Check your university’s semester rules before you register.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated in Pakistani universities?

Each subject’s grade points are multiplied by its credit hours to get quality points. Add the quality points and divide by the total credit hours for the semester. CGPA does the same across all semesters.

What is a good CGPA in Pakistan?

A CGPA of 3.0 or above is generally considered good, and 3.5+ is excellent. Many scholarships and competitive MS programmes ask for at least 3.0.

What is the minimum CGPA to pass a degree?

Most universities require a cumulative CGPA of at least 2.0 to graduate from a bachelor’s programme.

Does this calculator work for COMSATS, NUST and FAST?

Yes, as long as your university uses a 4.0 scale. The default HEC-style table matches many universities; if your university uses different cut-offs, edit the grading table in the calculator.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage for HEC?

HEC equivalence normally relies on your university’s own conversion. Ask your university for an equivalence certificate, or apply its published formula using our CGPA to percentage calculator.

Sources and methodology

Uses the credit-weighted GPA method and a commonly used HEC-style 4.0 grading table. Grading tables differ between universities and programmes, so the table is fully editable.
