CGPA Calculator (SGPA & CGPA)
Calculate your SGPA for one semester and your CGPA across all semesters, using the credit-weighted method set out in the UGC Choice Based Credit System.
SGPA = Σ(course credits × grade points) ÷ Σ course credits for one semester. CGPA = Σ(semester credits × SGPA) ÷ Σ semester credits across all semesters. For example, SGPAs of 8.2 (22 credits) and 7.8 (20 credits) give a CGPA of (180.4 + 156) ÷ 42 = 8.01.
How to use the CGPA calculator
- SGPA tab: add each subject with its credits and the letter grade on your marksheet (O, A+, A, B+…). If your university prints grade points instead, choose “Enter points” and type the number.
- Read your SGPA along with indicative percentage conversions.
- CGPA tab: enter each semester’s SGPA and its total credits. The calculator returns the credit-weighted CGPA, plus the simple average for comparison.
- Change the scale to 4-point or 5-point if your university does not use the 10-point system.
SGPA and CGPA formulas
These are the formulas published in the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines for the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), which most Indian universities follow. Many Pakistani and other universities use the same structure on a 4.0 scale.
The 10-point grading scale
| Letter grade | Meaning | Grade points |
|---|---|---|
| O | Outstanding | 10 |
| A+ | Excellent | 9 |
| A | Very good | 8 |
| B+ | Good | 7 |
| B | Above average | 6 |
| C | Average | 5 |
| P | Pass | 4 |
| F | Fail | 0 |
| Ab | Absent | 0 |
The marks needed for each letter (for example 90%+ for O) are set by each university or autonomous college, so the letter on your marksheet is what matters, not the raw marks.
Worked example: SGPA
| Subject | Credits | Grade | Grade points | Credit × points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Engineering Mathematics | 4 | A+ | 9 | 36 |
| Data Structures | 4 | A | 8 | 32 |
| Digital Electronics | 3 | B+ | 7 | 21 |
| Lab | 2 | O | 10 | 20 |
| Total | 13 | 109 |
SGPA = 109 ÷ 13 = 8.38.
Worked example: SGPA to CGPA
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | SGPA × credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 8.2 | 22 | 180.4 |
| 2 | 7.8 | 20 | 156.0 |
| 3 | 8.6 | 24 | 206.4 |
| Total | 66 | 542.8 |
CGPA = 542.8 ÷ 66 = 8.22. A simple average of the three SGPAs would give 8.20 — close here, but the gap grows when semesters carry very different credits, which is why the credit-weighted CGPA is the official one.
Converting CGPA to percentage
There is no single formula. CBSE uses CGPA × 9.5 for Class 10; many universities multiply by 10, and some use their own formula such as (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Use our CGPA to percentage calculator, which lets you choose the formula your board or university uses, and always prefer the formula printed on your transcript.
SGPA, CGPA and GPA — what is the difference?
- SGPA (semester grade point average) covers one semester.
- CGPA (cumulative grade point average) covers every semester completed so far.
- GPA is the general term. In the US it usually means a 4.0-scale average; in India and Pakistan “GPA” is often used for a single semester and “CGPA” for the overall result.
If you need a US-style 4.0 GPA for applications abroad, use the GPA scale converter for a proportional estimate, and remember that credential evaluators such as WES apply their own tables.
How to improve your CGPA
- Focus on high-credit subjects. A 4-credit subject moves your SGPA twice as much as a 2-credit subject.
- Do not neglect labs and practicals. They are usually easier to score highly in and still carry credits.
- Clear backlogs quickly. A failed subject adds 0 grade points but its credits still count until you pass it.
- Track SGPA every semester. A steady SGPA above your target lifts your CGPA gradually — the more semesters completed, the slower it moves.
CGPA needed for placements and higher studies
Many campus recruiters in India set an eligibility cut-off of 6.0–7.0 CGPA (or 60–70%) with no active backlogs. Postgraduate admissions and scholarships often ask for 6.5–7.5 or above, and some ask for a percentage equivalent — convert using your university’s formula with our CGPA to percentage calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How is CGPA calculated from SGPA?
Multiply each semester’s SGPA by that semester’s total credits, add the results, and divide by the total credits of all semesters. If every semester has the same credits, this equals the simple average of the SGPAs.
What is a good CGPA?
On the 10-point scale, 8.0 and above is generally considered very good and 7.0 is solid. Many companies set a cut-off of 6.0 or 6.5 for campus placement, and first division is often treated as 6.0 or above.
Is SGPA the same as GPA?
SGPA is the grade point average for one semester. Many universities simply call it GPA. CGPA is the cumulative average across all semesters.
Do failed subjects count in CGPA?
A failed subject is recorded as 0 grade points and its credits still count in the semester total, which lowers your SGPA. After you clear the subject in a re-exam, most universities replace the grade — check your university’s ordinance.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
Use the formula specified by your board or university. CBSE uses CGPA × 9.5; other universities use CGPA × 10 or their own formula. Our CGPA to percentage calculator includes the common formulas.

Sources and methodology
SGPA and CGPA use the credit-weighted formulas defined in the UGC CBCS guidelines. Grade-point values follow the UGC 10-point letter scale (O = 10 to P = 4). Percentage figures are indicative only.
