Grade Converter: Percentage to Letter Grade to GPA

Updated By the ProAcademy Tools editorial team3 min read

Convert any percentage, letter grade or 4.0 GPA into the other two — with the full US grading chart for quick reference.

Quick answer

On the standard US scale, 93–100% is an A (4.0), 90–92% an A− (3.7), 87–89% a B+ (3.3), 83–86% a B (3.0) and 80–82% a B− (2.7), continuing down to an F below 65% (0.0). So an 87% converts to a B+ and 3.3 grade points. Exact cut-offs vary by school.

How to use the grade converter

  1. Choose what you have: a percentage, a letter grade or a GPA.
  2. Enter the value. The matching letter, grade points and percentage range appear immediately.
  3. Check the highlighted row in the chart to see where your grade sits on the full scale.

Grade to percentage to GPA chart

Letter grade Percentage 4.0 GPA Quality
A+ 97–100% 4.0 Exceptional
A 93–96% 4.0 Excellent
A− 90–92% 3.7 Excellent
B+ 87–89% 3.3 Very good
B 83–86% 3.0 Good
B− 80–82% 2.7 Good
C+ 77–79% 2.3 Satisfactory
C 73–76% 2.0 Satisfactory
C− 70–72% 1.7 Below average
D+ 67–69% 1.3 Poor
D 65–66% 1.0 Poor (passing)
F Below 65% 0.0 Failing

This is the most widely used US college scale. Two common variations:

  • 10-point scale (90/80/70/60): A = 90–100, B = 80–89, C = 70–79, D = 60–69, F below 60. Common in high schools and some colleges.
  • A+ = 4.3: a minority of colleges award extra for an A+. Use the cumulative GPA calculator with the 4.3 option if that is your school.

How to convert a percentage to a GPA

1. Find the letter grade for your percentage on your school’s scale 2. Look up that letter’s grade points (A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3 …) 3. For several classes, average the points weighted by credits

A single percentage cannot be turned into a GPA with a formula like percentage ÷ 25. A 90% is an A− (3.7) on most scales, while 90 ÷ 25 = 3.6. The letter grade always comes first.

How to convert a GPA back to a letter grade

A GPA is an average, so it usually falls between two letters. A 3.4 sits between a B+ (3.3) and an A− (3.7) and is described as “B+ average”. The converter shows the closest letter. Common reference points:

  • 4.0 — straight A average
  • 3.5 — between B+ and A−
  • 3.0 — B average
  • 2.5 — between C+ and B−
  • 2.0 — C average (the minimum for good academic standing at most colleges)

Converting grades from other countries

Letter grades and percentages do not map neatly onto other systems. A 70% in the UK is a First, while 70% in the US is a C−. For international comparisons use the dedicated tools:

For official applications, credential evaluators such as WES and ECE use their own country-specific equivalency tables.

Plus and minus grades explained

Plus and minus grades split each letter into three bands. A B+ (87–89%) is the top of the B range and is worth 3.3; a B (83–86%) is worth 3.0; a B− (80–82%) is worth 2.7. The 0.3-point steps are standard across most US colleges, though a few use 0.33 or 0.25 steps, and some schools do not use plus/minus at all. On a transcript without plus/minus, every B is worth 3.0.

Percentage, letter and GPA — which one should I report?

  • On a US application or resume: report your GPA on the 4.0 scale, and say “weighted” or “unweighted” for high school.
  • On an international application: report your grades in your own system (percentage, CGPA or classification) and let the university convert them, unless it asks you to convert.
  • For one class: the percentage is the most precise, the letter grade is what appears on your transcript.

Keep your official transcript as the source of truth — conversions are for comparison only.

Frequently asked questions

What GPA is an 87%?

On the standard US scale, 87% is a B+, which is worth 3.3 grade points. On a simple 10-point scale (90/80/70/60) it is a B, worth 3.0.

What letter grade is a 3.5 GPA?

A 3.5 GPA is between a B+ (3.3) and an A− (3.7), so it is usually described as a B+/A− average.

Can I convert percentage to GPA by dividing by 25?

Not accurately. Dividing by 25 gives a rough proportional figure, but GPA is based on letter-grade bands. 90% is an A− (3.7) on most scales, not 3.6. Convert to a letter grade first.

Is a C passing?

A C (73–76%, 2.0) is passing in almost every US course, and a 2.0 GPA is usually the minimum for good academic standing. Some majors require a C or better in prerequisite courses.

What percentage is an A?

On the standard scale an A is 93–100%, and an A− is 90–92%. Schools using the 10-point scale count 90–100% as an A.

Sources and methodology

Uses the common US plus/minus scale. Individual schools and instructors set their own cut-offs, so treat ranges as typical rather than official.
