Attendance Calculator: Percentage, Classes to Attend & Bunk

Updated By the ProAcademy Tools editorial team3 min read

Check your attendance percentage, how many classes you can safely miss, and how many classes in a row you need to attend to get back to 75% — or any minimum your college sets.

Quick answer

Attendance % = classes attended ÷ classes held × 100. With 42 of 60 classes attended you are at 70%. To reach 75% you must attend the next 12 classes in a row, because (42 + 12) ÷ (60 + 12) = 75%. At 50 of 60 (83.3%) you could miss 6 classes and still stay at 75%.

How to use the attendance calculator

  1. Enter the total classes held so far in the subject (or across all subjects, if your college uses overall attendance).
  2. Enter the classes you attended.
  3. Set the required attendance — 75% is the most common rule in Indian and Pakistani universities; some colleges use 80% or 85%.
  4. Optional: enter the classes left in the term to see how many of them you can miss.

You will see your current percentage, and either the classes you can still miss or the classes you must attend without a break.

Attendance formulas

Attendance % = attended ÷ held × 100 Classes you can miss = floor((100 × attended − R × held) ÷ R) Classes you must attend = ceil((R × held − 100 × attended) ÷ (100 − R)) R = required attendance %, e.g. 75

These formulas assume every missed or attended class is added to the total, which is how almost all colleges count it.

Worked examples

Below 75%: 42 attended out of 60 = 70%. Classes needed in a row = (75 × 60 − 100 × 42) ÷ (100 − 75) = (4,500 − 4,200) ÷ 25 = 12. Check: 54 ÷ 72 = 75%.

Above 75%: 50 attended out of 60 = 83.33%. Classes you can miss = (100 × 50 − 75 × 60) ÷ 75 = (5,000 − 4,500) ÷ 75 = 6.67, rounded down to 6. Check: 50 ÷ 66 = 75.76%; one more absence would make it 50 ÷ 67 = 74.6%.

Planning the rest of term: with 50 of 60 attended and 20 classes left, the semester total will be 80 classes. To finish at 75% you need 60 attended in total, so you must attend 10 of the remaining 20 and can miss 10.

Quick reference: classes needed to reach 75%

Held Attended Current % Attend in a row to reach 75%
40 26 65.0% 16
50 35 70.0% 10
60 40 66.7% 20
80 56 70.0% 16
100 70 70.0% 20

The lower your attendance falls, the more classes it takes to recover — every absent day needs three present days to cancel out under a 75% rule.

Why attendance rules matter

  • Exam eligibility: many universities in India and Pakistan detain students below 75% attendance from end-semester exams, sometimes with limited condonation for medical reasons.
  • Visa requirements: international students in some countries must meet attendance conditions.
  • Learning: regular attendance is consistently linked with better grades — and with fewer surprises at exam time.

Medical leave, sports or official duty leave may be added to your attendance at many institutions if you apply with documents. Check your university’s attendance ordinance for condonation limits.

Tips to keep attendance above the minimum

  1. Check weekly, not monthly. Small gaps are easy to close; big gaps need many consecutive days.
  2. Watch subject-wise attendance. Many colleges apply the rule per subject, so one weak subject can block your exams.
  3. Keep leave documents. Medical certificates submitted on time are often counted.
  4. Use spare absences carefully. The “classes you can miss” figure is a ceiling, not a target.

Once attendance is sorted, keep your grades on track with the CGPA calculator or Pakistan GPA calculator.

Attendance targets compared

Classes held Minimum to attend at 75% At 80% At 85%
40 30 32 34
60 45 48 51
80 60 64 68
100 75 80 85
120 90 96 102

Use this table to plan a whole term: if your subject has 60 classes in the semester and needs 75%, you can miss no more than 15 of them in total.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my attendance percentage?

Divide the classes you attended by the total classes held and multiply by 100. 45 out of 60 is 45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75%.

How many classes can I bunk and still have 75% attendance?

Use floor((100 × attended − 75 × held) ÷ 75). With 50 of 60 attended you can miss 6 more classes and still be at or above 75%.

How many classes do I need to attend to get 75%?

Use ceil((75 × held − 100 × attended) ÷ 25). With 42 of 60 attended you need 12 consecutive classes to reach exactly 75%.

Is 75% attendance compulsory?

Many Indian universities, following UGC and university rules, require 75% attendance to sit end-semester exams. Pakistani universities commonly use 75% or 80%. Check your own college’s rules.

Does medical leave count towards attendance?

At many colleges approved medical or duty leave can be condoned up to a limit if you submit documents on time. The exact limit is set by your university.

Sources and methodology

Uses standard attendance arithmetic, assuming each future class is added to the total held. Results are rounded conservatively (down for classes you can miss, up for classes you must attend).
