Reading Time Calculator & Words Per Minute Test

Updated By the ProAcademy Tools editorial team3 min read

Paste any text — an essay, article, speech or chapter — to see how long it takes to read silently and aloud, along with word, sentence and page counts. Or measure your own reading speed in words per minute.

Quick answer

Reading time = word count ÷ reading speed. The average adult reads non-fiction silently at about 238 words per minute, so a 2,380-word article takes about 10 minutes. Spoken aloud at a typical presentation pace of about 140 words per minute, the same text takes about 17 minutes.

How to use the reading time calculator

  1. Paste your text into the box, or type a word count if you already know it. Your text is counted in your browser and never uploaded.
  2. Choose a reading speed. 238 wpm is the research average for adults reading non-fiction silently; pick slower or faster, or set your own.
  3. Choose a speaking speed if you are preparing a speech, presentation or video script.
  4. Read the results: reading time, speaking time, words, sentences, paragraphs, characters and approximate pages.
  5. Measure yourself with the Words per minute tab or the built-in reading speed test.

Reading time formula

Reading time (minutes) = words ÷ reading speed (wpm) Speaking time (minutes) = words ÷ speaking speed (wpm) Words per minute = words read ÷ minutes taken

Average reading speeds

A large 2019 review of 190 studies (Brysbaert, Journal of Memory and Language) found that adults read English silently at about 238 words per minute for non-fiction and 260 words per minute for fiction. Reading aloud is much slower — about 183 wpm on average.

Reader / activity Typical speed
Careful study of technical text 100–200 wpm
Average adult, non-fiction (silent) ~238 wpm
Average adult, fiction (silent) ~260 wpm
Fast reader 300–400 wpm
Reading aloud ~180 wpm
Presentation or speech 120–160 wpm

Claims of 1,000+ wpm “speed reading” usually come with a large drop in comprehension.

How long does it take to read…

Length Words (approx.) At 238 wpm Spoken at 140 wpm
One single-spaced page 500 2 min 3.6 min
1,000-word essay 1,000 4.2 min 7.1 min
2,500-word article 2,500 10.5 min 17.9 min
8,000-word chapter 8,000 34 min 57 min
80,000-word novel 80,000 5.6 hours —

Speech and presentation timing

Most people speak at 120–160 words per minute when presenting, faster in conversation. As a rule of thumb, a 5-minute speech is about 650–750 words, a 10-minute talk about 1,300–1,500 words, and a 1-minute video script about 140 words. Rehearse aloud with a timer — pauses, slides and audience reactions add time.

Words per minute: test your reading speed

Open the “Reading speed test” tab, press start, read the passage at your normal pace and press stop. The tool divides the word count by your time to give your wpm. For a fair result:

  • Read for understanding, as you would for a class — not skimming.
  • Take the test when you are rested, and repeat it a few times.
  • Compare yourself with the averages above rather than with speed-reading claims.

Using reading time for study planning

Knowing your reading speed makes revision plans realistic. If a module has 120 pages of reading at roughly 400 words per page, that is 48,000 words — about 3.4 hours at 238 wpm, and more with note-taking. Spread it across the week rather than the night before. For other planning tools, try the attendance calculator and the final grade calculator.

How to read faster without losing understanding

  • Preview first. Read headings, the introduction and the conclusion before the full text — you will read the body faster because you know where it is going.
  • Reduce re-reading. Most slow reading comes from going back over lines. Read with a clear question in mind and keep moving.
  • Match speed to purpose. Skim for structure, read normally for understanding, and slow down for formulas, definitions and arguments you must remember.
  • Read in blocks. 25–40 minutes of focused reading followed by a short break keeps both speed and comprehension higher than one long session.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate reading time?

Divide the number of words by a reading speed in words per minute. For 1,500 words at 238 wpm, 1,500 ÷ 238 ≈ 6.3 minutes.

What is the average reading speed?

Research reviewing 190 studies found adults read English silently at about 238 words per minute for non-fiction and 260 for fiction.

How many words is a 5-minute speech?

At a typical 130–150 words per minute, a 5-minute speech is about 650–750 words.

How long does it take to read 1,000 words?

About 4 minutes at an average silent reading speed of 238 wpm, and about 7 minutes reading aloud at 140 wpm.

How do I calculate words per minute?

Count the words you read (or typed or spoke) and divide by the minutes it took. 600 words in 2 minutes 30 seconds is 600 ÷ 2.5 = 240 wpm.

Is my text stored or uploaded?

No. Word counting happens entirely in your browser; nothing you paste is sent to our servers.

Sources and methodology

Speeds are based on Brysbaert (2019). Page estimates assume about 500 words per single-spaced and 250 per double-spaced page in 12-point text.
