IELTS Band Score Calculator (Academic & General Training)
Convert your Listening and Reading correct answers (out of 40) into band scores, add Writing and Speaking, and get your overall band exactly the way IELTS rounds it — then check it against a university or visa requirement.
Your IELTS overall band is the average of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, rounded to the nearest half band: an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. So bands of 6.5, 6.5, 5.0 and 7.0 average 6.25 and give an overall 6.5, while an average of 6.125 gives 6.0.
How to use the IELTS band score calculator
- Choose Academic or General Training. Listening is the same for both, but Reading is converted differently.
- Enter Listening and Reading as correct answers out of 40 — or switch either one to a band score if you already have it.
- Add your Writing and Speaking bands (0–9 in half bands) from a teacher, an examiner-marked practice test or your Test Report Form.
- Optional: open the requirement checker and enter what your university or visa needs, such as 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0.
How the overall band is rounded
IELTS weights the four skills equally. Add the four bands, divide by four, then round:
| Average ends in | Rounded to | Example | Overall band |
|---|---|---|---|
| .0 or .125 | the whole band below | 6.125 | 6.0 |
| .25, .375 or .5 | the half band | 6.25 / 6.375 | 6.5 |
| .625 | the half band | 6.625 | 6.5 |
| .75 or .875 | the next whole band | 6.75 / 3.875 | 7.0 / 4.0 |
Notice the jumps: if your average is 6.625, raising just one skill by half a band lifts the average to 6.75 and your overall band from 6.5 to 7.0. The calculator tells you when you are this close.
IELTS Listening and Reading band score charts
Listening and Reading each have 40 questions worth one mark. IELTS publishes these guide points and notes that the exact marks for each band vary slightly from one test version to another:
| Band | Listening | Academic Reading | General Training Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 | 35 | 35 | 38 |
| 7 | 30 | 30 | 34 |
| 6 | 23 | 23 | 30 |
| 5 | 16 | 15 | 23 |
| 4 | — | — | 15 |
The full conversion the calculator uses (widely used approximations built around those official points):
| Band | Listening (correct of 40) | Academic Reading | General Training Reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9.0 | 39–40 | 39–40 | 40 |
| 8.5 | 37–38 | 37–38 | 39 |
| 8.0 | 35–36 | 35–36 | 37–38 |
| 7.5 | 32–34 | 33–34 | 36 |
| 7.0 | 30–31 | 30–32 | 34–35 |
| 6.5 | 26–29 | 27–29 | 32–33 |
| 6.0 | 23–25 | 23–26 | 30–31 |
| 5.5 | 18–22 | 19–22 | 27–29 |
| 5.0 | 16–17 | 15–18 | 23–26 |
| 4.5 | 13–15 | 13–14 | 19–22 |
| 4.0 | 10–12 | 10–12 | 15–18 |
General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band because its texts are less complex.
How Writing and Speaking are marked
Examiners score Writing and Speaking against four criteria each, using public band descriptors:
- Writing: Task Achievement (Task 1) or Task Response (Task 2), Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Task 2 is longer and carries more weight than Task 1.
- Speaking: Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation.
Writing is often the lowest band, so it is usually where extra practice moves your overall score most.

Frequently asked questions
How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?
Add your four skill bands, divide by four and round to the nearest half band. Averages ending in .25 round up to the next half band and averages ending in .75 round up to the next whole band.
How many correct answers do I need for band 7 in IELTS Listening?
IELTS guidance puts band 7 at about 30 correct answers out of 40 in Listening and Academic Reading, and about 34 out of 40 in General Training Reading. The exact number varies slightly by test.
Is 6.5 a good IELTS score?
Yes. 6.5 is the most common requirement for undergraduate and many postgraduate courses in the UK, Canada and Australia, although some courses also set a minimum for each skill.
Does IELTS round 6.25 up or down?
Up. An average of 6.25 becomes an overall band of 6.5. An average of 6.125 rounds down to 6.0.
Is the Listening test the same for Academic and General Training?
Yes. Listening and Speaking are the same for both. Reading and Writing differ, which is why General Training Reading uses a different conversion table.

Sources and methodology
Overall band rounding follows the rule published by IDP and the British Council. Listening and Reading conversions match the official guide points (for example 30/40 = band 7); intermediate rows are widely used approximations and are labelled as such.
