How every GPA is calculated
All of these tools use the same core idea: convert each grade to points, multiply by the course credits, add everything up and divide by the total credits.
GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits
What changes between systems is the grade-point scale (4.0, 4.33, 5.0, 7 or 10) and which courses count. Our GPA scale guide compares the scales side by side.
GPA questions students ask most
- Semester GPA vs cumulative GPA: a semester GPA covers one term; cumulative GPA covers every graded course so far.
- Weighted vs unweighted: weighted GPA adds points for Honors, AP and IB classes; unweighted treats every class the same.
- SGPA vs CGPA: SGPA is one semester on the 10-point scale; CGPA is the credit-weighted average of all semesters.
