UCAS Points Calculator

Updated By the ProAcademy Tools editorial team3 min read

Add up your UCAS Tariff points for A levels, AS levels, the EPQ, BTEC Nationals, the IB Diploma, T Levels and Scottish Highers — and convert any A level offer like AAB into points.

Quick answer

UCAS Tariff points turn qualifications into a single number. An A level A* is worth 56 points, an A 48, a B 40, a C 32, a D 24 and an E 16, so AAB = 136 points and A*AA = 152. A BTEC Extended Diploma at DDM is worth 128 points.

How to use the UCAS points calculator

  1. Pick a qualification for each row: A level, AS level, EPQ, BTEC, IB, T Level or Scottish Higher/Advanced Higher.
  2. Choose the grade you have or expect. The points for that grade appear in the list.
  3. Add every qualification you are taking. Your total UCAS points update instantly.
  4. Use the quick converter to turn a grade offer such as AAB or A*AA into points.

How universities use UCAS points

  • Many courses ask for grades, not points. An offer of AAB means those three grades — 136 points from other qualifications may not be accepted.
  • Points offers are more flexible. A “120 UCAS points” offer can usually be met by combinations of A levels, BTECs and the EPQ, sometimes with a required grade in one subject.
  • Not everything counts. Some universities exclude AS levels, the EPQ or general studies. If you complete an A level, the AS in the same subject does not add extra points.
  • Check the course page. Entry requirements and accepted qualifications are listed on each course’s UCAS page.

If you are also applying to universities in other countries, see the ATAR calculator for Australia and the SAT score calculator for the US. At university, our UK degree classification calculator predicts your final degree.

Mixing qualifications

You can combine qualifications. Examples:

  • Two A levels + BTEC Extended Certificate: A, B and a Distinction = 48 + 40 + 48 = 136 points.
  • Three A levels + EPQ: BBB plus an A in the EPQ = 120 + 24 = 144 points.
  • IB Diploma: HL 6, 6, 5 and SL 6, 5, 5 with a B in the core = 48 + 48 + 32 + 24 + 16 + 16 + 10 = 194 points.

What if my predicted grades change?

Universities make offers on predicted grades and confirm them on results day in August. If you miss the offer slightly, the university may still accept you, especially if you narrowly miss a points-based offer. If you do better than expected, UCAS has historically offered routes such as Adjustment and Clearing to look for other places. Recalculate your total here with your actual grades on results day.

Sources and methodology

Point values follow the UCAS Tariff tables that apply from 2017 entry onward, cross-checked against college admissions pages. Universities decide which qualifications they accept.
