Weighted Grade Calculator

Updated By the ProAcademy Tools editorial team3 min read

Turn your syllabus categories — homework, quizzes, labs, midterms, finals — into an accurate class grade, and see what you need on the work that is still to come.

Quick answer

A weighted grade multiplies each category’s score by its weight, adds the results and divides by the total weight: Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ weights. Homework at 90% (20%), quizzes at 80% (30%) and a midterm at 75% (25%) give (18 + 24 + 18.75) ÷ 75 = 81% so far.

How to use the weighted grade calculator

  1. Copy the categories from your syllabus, for example Homework 20%, Quizzes 30%, Midterm 25%, Final 25%.
  2. Enter your average score in each category as a percentage — or switch to “Points earned / possible” if your gradebook shows points.
  3. Enter the weight of each category. Leave out categories you have no grades in yet.
  4. Read your current grade. If your weights add up to less than 100%, the calculator also shows how much of the course is still to come.
  5. Add a target grade to see the average you need on all remaining work.

Weighted grade formula

Weighted grade = Σ (category score × category weight) ÷ Σ (weights entered) Needed on remaining work = (target × 100 − Σ score × weight) ÷ remaining weight

Dividing by the weights you have entered — rather than by 100 — gives your grade so far, which is what most online gradebooks display. Once every category is graded, the weights add up to 100% and the two are the same.

Worked example

Category Weight Your score Score × weight
Homework 20% 90% 18.00
Quizzes 30% 80% 24.00
Midterm 25% 75% 18.75
Final exam 25% not taken —
Total so far 75% 60.75

Current grade = 60.75 ÷ 75 = 81.0%.

To finish with an 85%, you need (85 × 100 − 6,075) ÷ 25 = 2,425 ÷ 25 = 97% on the final. To finish with an 80%, you need (8,000 − 6,075) ÷ 25 = 77%.

Points-based classes

Some teachers grade by total points instead of weighted categories. In that case each assignment’s weight is simply its share of the total points, and your grade is total points earned ÷ total points possible. Switch the calculator to points mode and enter each category’s points earned, points possible and weight — or a single “Total” row with weight 100.

Common mistakes

  • Averaging the category scores directly. A 95% on a 5% participation grade does not offset a 70% on a 40% exam. Weighting fixes that.
  • Forgetting dropped scores. If your teacher drops the lowest quiz, remove it before averaging the category.
  • Weights that don’t add to 100. Check your syllabus — if weights add to 110%, there is usually extra credit built in. The calculator normalises by the total weight and warns you.
  • Mixing points and percentages. Convert everything to the same type before you enter it, or use points mode.

Turning the result into a letter grade

Percentage Letter
93–100 A
90–92 A−
87–89 B+
83–86 B
80–82 B−
77–79 C+
73–76 C
70–72 C−
67–69 D+
65–66 D
Below 65 F

This is a common US scale, and the one the calculator uses for letters; many teachers use a simpler 90/80/70/60 scale without plus and minus. For the GPA value of each letter, see the grade converter.

Weighted vs unweighted average

An unweighted average treats every score equally: 90, 80 and 70 average to 80. A weighted average lets bigger tasks count for more. If those same scores were homework (20%), a midterm (30%) and a final (50%), the weighted average is (90 × 20 + 80 × 30 + 70 × 50) ÷ 100 = 77% — three points lower, because the weakest score carried the most weight.

How to use this calculator through the semester

  1. Week 1: copy the categories and weights from your syllabus.
  2. After each graded task: update the category average. Your grade so far updates automatically.
  3. Before each major exam: enter your target grade to see the average you need on everything remaining.
  4. Before the final: switch to the final grade calculator for the exact score you need.

Your inputs are saved in your browser, so you can come back after each new grade without re-entering everything.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a weighted grade?

Multiply each category score by its weight, add the products, and divide by the sum of the weights. For 90% homework (20%) and 80% tests (80%): (90 × 20 + 80 × 80) ÷ 100 = 82%.

What if my weights do not add up to 100%?

If some categories are not graded yet, divide by the weights you have — that is your grade so far. If the syllabus weights add to more than 100%, there is usually extra credit; the calculator normalises the total.

How do I find what I need on the rest of my assignments?

Enter all graded categories with their weights, then type your target grade. The calculator divides the points you still need by the remaining weight to show the average required.

Is a weighted grade the same as GPA?

No. A weighted grade is your percentage in one class. GPA averages letter-grade points across classes. Weighted GPA is a different idea — it gives extra points for Honors and AP classes.

Can I use this for Canvas weighted categories?

Yes. Canvas “assignment groups” are weighted categories. Enter each group’s percentage and weight exactly as Canvas lists them.

Sources and methodology

Uses the weighted arithmetic mean. Letter grades use the common US plus/minus scale and are shown for guidance; your syllabus defines the official cut-offs.
